A Brief History
The Legend of Vail Valley
Vail Mountain opened in December 1962, founded by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton after Seibert — a 10th Mountain Division veteran — climbed the ridge on snowshoes in 1954 and envisioned a world-class resort. Within a decade, Vail had become America's largest ski resort, drawing visitors from across the globe with its legendary Back Bowls and meticulously groomed Blue Sky Basin.
Beaver Creek, Vail's neighboring resort, opened in 1980 just 10 miles west in Avon. Originally planned as a 1976 Winter Olympics site, Beaver Creek has grown into one of North America's most exclusive ski destinations — famous for its perfectly groomed runs, Birds of Prey World Cup race course, and the iconic Allie's Cabin mountaintop dining. Together, Vail and Beaver Creek form Colorado's premier ski corridor.
