A Brief History
The Story of Summit County
Breckenridge's roots run deep — it was founded as a gold and silver mining town in 1859, making it one of Colorado's oldest mountain communities. The ski resort opened in December 1961, transforming the historic Victorian downtown into one of America's most visited ski destinations. With five interconnected peaks and terrain for every level, Breckenridge consistently ranks among the top resorts in North America for skier visits.
Keystone Resort, just 6 miles east of Breckenridge, opened in 1970 and quickly earned a reputation as Summit County's family-friendly alternative — offering night skiing under the stars and a laid-back village vibe. Together, Breckenridge and Keystone are connected via the Epic Pass, making them a seamless two-resort destination for skiers seeking variety without the hassle of traveling far.
